Salman Khan returned with an Eid offering after a gap of four years, with his film Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. The family entertainer managed to do well in the mass circuits on its opening day, but couldn’t draw a similar response from multiplex audiences. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared that the film earned Rs 15.81 cr on its opening day, which is not at par with Salman’s earlier Eid releases. His last Eid release, Bharat, had opened with Rs 42.30 cr.
Adarsh wrote on Twitter, “#KisiKaBhaiKisiKiJaan is underwhelming on Day 1… More so when one compares it with #SalmanKhan’s #Eid releases from 2010 to 2019… Metros weak, mass pockets better, but not great… Extremely important for biz to jump multi-fold today [#Eid]… Fri ₹ 15.81 cr. #India biz. #KBKJ.”
According to a Bollywood Hungama report, the mass market showed a better response in comparison to multiplexes. Box Office India reported that besides Hyderabad, no metro city received a good footfall in the theatres. This could be because of Venkatesh Daggubati’s involvement in the film. The Hindi occupancy of the family entertainer was recorded at just 15.33%, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.
However, this can change over the weekend as Eid falls on Saturday, and as has been the trend, people lap up Salman’s films on the holiday. Bollywood Hungama shared that the film is expected to see a jump of 75-100% over Saturday and Sunday, bringing in a good total over the weekend.
A lot has been riding on Salman’s Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan since no Bollywood film besides Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan (Rs 543.05 cr), Ranbir Kapoor’s Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar (Rs 147.12 cr) and Rani Mukerji’s small-scale Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway (Rs 21.17 cr) has registered an impressive total at the ticket counters so far this year.
Also, as seen in the first quarter of the year, the audience has outrightly rejected remakes of South films, the biggest examples being Kartik Aaryan’s Shehzada and Akshay Kumar’s Selfiee. How audiences respond to Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, which is a remake of Veeram, will be known in the coming days. Maybe word of mouth can save the film, but as far as critics are concerned, the film has been roundly rejected by them.
The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta gave it a one-star rating. A section of her review read, “The last time a Salman Khan film had Bhaijaan in the title, its prefix was ‘Bajrangi’, and that solid Kabir Khan film had, verily, a story. This Bhaijaan is running on empty.”
