Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan welcomed their first baby boy, Taimur, in 2016, but as soon as they announced his name to the world, the tide turned and they found themselves being targeted by trolls. Taimur Ali Khan, who is now a little over six years old, was trolled as a newborn baby for his name and his parents, Kareena and Saif, went through a rather tough time during those early days. At The Indian Express’ Express Adda event on Monday, Kareena was asked about reportedly “howling” in the hospital room because of how viciously her son was being attacked online.

Recalling that time, Kareena said, “I don’t think any mother or any child has to go through that.” Kareena said that she still finds it puzzling as to why they were attacked, because they didn’t want to offend anyone. “What was the reason… I still don’t really get it, because nobody is meant to offend anyone or do anything. I think we have freedom of speech, freedom of what we want to do, at least both Saif and me believe that very strongly,” she said.

She said that Taimur means ‘iron man’, and that she liked the sound of that. She then shared that Taimur was actually the name of Saif’s first childhood friend, and he had thought that if he ever has a son, he would want to name him Taimur. “When we came up with the name… Saif actually said… He grew up with a neighbour friend, and he always really liked his name and his name was Taimur, so he said, ‘You know, if I have a son, he was my first friend. I’d like to name him Taimur’, and that’s exactly how Taimur was named, because he was Saif’s first friend when he was living in town here,” she said.

Kareena said that when they looked up the meaning of the name and found that it meant iron, she thought to herself that she would be happy to have a son who is as strong as iron man. “I said if I have a boy, I always want him to be as strong as iron man,” she said.

She clarified that the name was not in reference to any historical figure. “It has no sort of take or resemblance to anything or anyone. It just went like… it’s not even like.. it’s not even the same name,” she shared. The 43-year-old actor said that she was in a bit of a “shock” when the trolling started, but she and Saif decided to stay silent about it. “I got into a bit of a shock when this happened. But luckily, I think because of us being strong and resilient and silent, I think it just kind of died down. He was the most photographed child for what reason I have no idea,” she said.

Kareena recalled it as a “traumatic time” and said, “It was very difficult, but I think both Saif and me handled it with a lot of dignity because we never actually spoke, or said anything. We just believed in what we did and we just believed in naming our child just a beautiful name.”
