Karan Johar is tricked into making show about ‘nepo king’ and clash with ‘small time outsider’, says ‘it has no connection with me’. Watch hilarious video
Is Disney Plus Hotstar series Showtime Karan Johar's biopic? The filmmaker tries to decode his own myth in new video.

Few are able to do self-aware comedy better than Karan Johar. The filmmaker on Tuesday posted a hilarious scripted video taking his public perception of “nepotism king” and turning it into a relentlessly funny dig to promote his latest series, Showtime.
Through his Dharmatics Entertainment, Johar has backed Showtime– a Disney Plus Hotstar series which aims to uncover the deep dark side of the Hindi film industry.
In the new video, set in Karan Johar’s office, the filmmaker is reading and rejecting script ideas and is frustrated with “bl**dy naach-gaana, fancy sarees, mushy prem kahaani, item songs, what jhumka.” Johar announces that he is “done with it,” and says he wants to do something that makes audience feels it isn’t just any other Karan Johar project.
Just then he is pitched a “realistic” story, which opens on this big Bollywood producer, without whose consent nothing moves in the industry. “He himself is the son of a legendary producer-director, making films under their banner. And one after the other, goes on and on launching star kids,” the writer, played by actor Vijay Maurya, says.
An empathetic Karan nods and says, “A lot of people do that, I’ve heard, it happens.” The writer continues, “He delivers super hits and blockbuster films, but the critics seem to thrash all of them.” Karan then adds, still unaware that the writer is talking about him, “I feel bad for people who go through this, I really do.”
The writer then raises the stakes. “People call him shrewd, cunning, arrogant, over smart and even Nepo-king. Karan thinks. And one fine day, ek outsider aati hai (an outsider enters the scene) and they collide,” drawing a parallel between his infamous Koffee with Karan episode where the filmmaker was dubbed the flagbearer of nepotism by Kangana Ranaut.
An emotional Karan then hugs Vijay Maurya and says, “It is amazing, this is what I call fresh. A big-time producer vs small time outsider. Dark side of Bollywood, star tantrums, pretend friends, insecurities, publicity stunts… wow. This truly feels like it has no connection whatsoever with Karan Johar. I love it, I am green lighting it. It is Showtime.”
The filmmaker is then shown talking to his mother on phone, excited to break the now show idea to her, only to finally realise what he has greenlit. “No no, it is not based on me. Don’t be silly, not at all. Not me,” he says and disconnects the phone. “How can it be me?” he wonders and then breaks the fourth wall to look directly at the viewer, puzzled and then it hits him.
