Filmmaker Karan Johar has been lately speaking about the ‘flawed’ gender politics of his directorial debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He did the same during the latest episode of his talk show, Koffee with Karan, where he was in conversation with Rani Mukerji and Kajol, the female leads of the 1998 movie. But this time, he got a strong reaction from Kajol as she asked him to “shut up”.

Karan, while revealing how Rani has ‘fired’ him a couple of times for ‘apologising’ for the gender politics of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, also tried to explain that what he showed in the film was not his mindset, but a result of what he had learnt from the Hindi cinema. “I learnt from Hindi cinema. So, whatever the film had, it was not me thinking inappropriately. It was just what my mind was trained to be,” he said.

As Karan Johar said this, Kajol told him to “shut up” because “you are sitting and defending something that we did 25 years back which actually did well”. Karan replied, “I am proud of my first film.”

The filmmaker went ahead to discuss the ‘ageism’ in Indian cinema and male actors romancing much younger actresses. Rani Mukerji agreed with him and said, “It is the truth of cinema and not world cinema, Indian cinema.” Kajol added that this is happening in society as well, “You have older men with younger wives and nobody raises an eyebrow. This has been happening since time immemorial. You have 30-year-old men marrying 13-year-old girls for god knows 100 of years.”

Karan Johar further mentioned that while Shah Rukh Khan played the father of an eight-year-old daughter when he was 32, no actor today would agree to play a father at this age. “Men in the industry today don’t want to age. Interestingly, when Shah Rukh Khan played a father, he was 32 years old. But today you ask a 32-year-old, if they will play a father. This is not the case today. I can say that the industry can be ageist.”

Meanwhile, during the episode, Karan, along with Rani and Kajol, shared memories from the shoot of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Rani also recalled that during the film’s shoot, Karan “snatched food” from her as he wanted her to lose weight.
