Junaid Khan says he was raised by mother Reena because dad Aamir Khan was busy with work: ‘But if you need him, he’ll give you all the time in world’

Aamir Khan married Reena Dutta in 1986 and has two children with her, Junaid and daughter Ira. The couple divorced in 2002. Junaid recently made his screen debut with Netflix's Maharaj.

What makes actor Junaid Khan the person that he is today? A mix of the lessons he learned from his superstar father Aamir Khan, and the upbringing his mother Reena Dutta gave him. Junaid, who recently made his screen debut with the Netflix drama Maharaj, said that he has observed how Aamir learns a lot from his failures. “He has been doing this for 40 years now, he has seen everything,” Junaid said about his father, whose last two films Laal Singh Chaddha and Thugs of Hindostan failed at the box office.

In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Junaid said that his father has “the best solution for everything” related to films. “There is a lot to learn from just how he conducts himself. Failures affect him, but he takes the time to process it and then move on to learning from it. He will figure out what went wrong and proceed from there, so that’s his process which is probably the best way to go about it,” he said.

When asked how big of an influence his mother Reena has had on him, the 31-year-old said that she is the one who has “shaped” his personality, as growing up, Aamir was mostly busy with his professional commitments and wasn’t around much. “My mother has a huge impact on my life. She is the one who brought me up. Papa is a very loving father, but he would be busy a lot in life. So, the one person who has shaped me the most as a person is my mother. But if there is a difficulty that I am going through, I can call anyone, maa, papa, Ira. They are always one phone call away. Even papa, who is incredibly busy, if you need to get a hold of him, it will not take you more than a couple of minutes, and if you need it, he will have all the time in the world you want. I have a supportive, open family. So whenever you want to talk, it is always open for discussion,” Junaid added.

In 2022, while appearing on an episode of Koffee with Karan, Aamir Khan had revealed regretting not spending enough time with his family, especially his kids, as he was consumed with his acting work.

He had said, “A year ago, I went through a lot of introspection. I felt I did not nurture my relationships like my work. I realised that I’ve not spent so much time with Ira and Junaid since they were children. Now, in the last months, I’m a changed person. I connect more with my family, my children, Kiran’s parents, Reena’s parents, my mother, sister and brother. I would have liked to spend much more time with them at the cost of my work. But at that time, I was just so passionately following what I was doing.”

Though Aamir took time off after the failure of Laal Singh Chaddha, he will next be seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, which is gearing up for a December release.
