As Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan nears the end of its record-breaking run, the question is this: does it have enough juice to become the first-ever Hindi movie in history to make more than Rs 600 crore just from its native language release alone? Jawan has collected a total of Rs 636 crore across all languages so far, of which around Rs 60 crore has come from the Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions.
The film’s Hindi collections stand at Rs 577 crore, which suggests that Rs 23 crore more might be a tall ask at this stage of its release. The film did, after all, just complete its sixth weekend, during which it made more than Rs 9 crore, thanks in most part to the boost that it got on Friday because of discounted ticket prices on National Cinema Day. On its 40th day of release, Jawan made around Rs 60 lakh across India, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.
Globally, the film has grossed Rs 1138 crore, according to the latest figures shared by Red Chillies Entertainment. While it’s still the fifth-biggest Indian film of all time, Jawan is now inching closer to the lifetime global grosses posted by KGF: Chapter 2 and RRR, which stand at between Rs 1215 crore and Rs 1230 crore, respectively. The top two Indian movies of all time are Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, with Rs 1780 crore to its name, and Aamir Khan’s Dangal, which grossed Rs 2400 crore worldwide, mostly from China, in 2016.
For context, both Jawan and Pathaan combined haven’t grossed as much as Dangal did in total, but then again, China isn’t the open market that it used to be in the pre-pandemic era, nor did it allow Jawan or Pathaan to release. Directed by Atlee, Jawan was designed as Shah Rukh’s first pan-India film, with supporting roles played by Tamil stars Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi.
The film has broken numerous records during its run, which includes the biggest opening, biggest opening weekend, biggest opening week and biggest single-day haul in the history of Hindi movies. It also became the fastest Hindi movie to cross important box office milestone, and the first Hindi movie to make more than Rs 600 crore domestically. Thanks to its fabulous performance, and that of Pathaan and Gadar 2, the Bollywood box office returned to form after a period of uncertainty.
