Actor-writer-musician Piyush Mishra highlighted the difference between the current generation of actors with the older lot, using the late Irrfan Khan as an example. He said that youngsters these days want quick results, and aren’t willing to put in the hard work required to hone their craft. This impatience wasn’t there with the older generation, he said in a new interview with Film Companion, recalling Irrfan’s struggle. He said that Irrfan, who was his junior at the National School of Drama, was caught in an internal struggle with himself, because he wanted to improve his craft.
Asked what it is that he likes about the younger generation, Piyush Mishra said in Hindi, “I don’t know if there’s anything. This generation is impatient. They want everything fast. They think that if they’ve decided to become actors, success should follow immediately. We paid our dues, we worked hard and put in the years.”
He said that any good skill requires time. Some people get what they want immediately, he said, and they fail to recognise its value. They become stars very quickly, but later fizzle out. Others work hard for their success, which is why they value it more, he said.
Irrfan was regarded as one of the most talented actors of his generation. He made a mark for himself not only in India, but also abroad. He died in 2020 after a two-year battle with cancer. He worked with Piyush Mishra in the film Maqbool.
