Imtiaz Ali says 2020 film Love Aaj Kal had a ‘great’ story, but it could not ‘express’ itself well: ‘When you make such subjects, they are very risky’

Imtiaz also tried to explain the theme of the film, which revolved around a new-gen couple Vir (Kartik Aaryan) and Zoe (Sara Ali Khan), and a 90s couple Raghu (Randeep Hooda) and Leena (Arushi Sharma). He explained, “You might sleep with somebody but after that, you might feel, ‘I didn’t touch her/him. I didn’t get the value of this interaction from this person.’ For us, it was not possible during those days because during those days we never thought of that. Our procedure was something else. You can spend a night with somebody and feel you want her/him now. So, that is how it started in my mind.”

The filmmaker also shared how exploring such subjects might be risky as he added, “When you make such subjects, they are very risky. There is no backup. If you fall, you fall to the ground. But then, there is no other way to make movies.”

During the release of Love Aaj Kal in 2020, Imtiaz Ali was often questioned about his decision to name the film the same as his already hit movie Love Aaj Kal (2010). Imtiaz clarified, “The concept was the same as Love Aaj Kal and if I would have named it something else, people would have said, ‘He has made the same film with a new title.'”
