Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali feels that his 2020 film Love Aaj Kal, starring Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan, had a great story, but it couldn’t ‘express’ itself well. And hence, the movie failed to attract cine-goers to movie halls. Imtiaz also explained the reason why he kept the title of the film similar to his 2010 movie Love Aaj Kal, which featured Deepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan in the lead roles.
During his interaction with actor Roshan Abbas on the Stumble podcast, Imtiaz said 2020’s Love Aaj Kal had a “great” story, but since the film couldn’t work at the box office, it seemed as if everything about it was “problematic”. He added, “There is something very nice in that world, the fractured way in which the young people live. It (the film) did not express itself.”
The filmmaker also shared how exploring such subjects might be risky as he added, “When you make such subjects, they are very risky. There is no backup. If you fall, you fall to the ground. But then, there is no other way to make movies.”
During the release of Love Aaj Kal in 2020, Imtiaz Ali was often questioned about his decision to name the film the same as his already hit movie Love Aaj Kal (2010). Imtiaz clarified, “The concept was the same as Love Aaj Kal and if I would have named it something else, people would have said, ‘He has made the same film with a new title.'”
