Imtiaz Ali says he’d never invite Rockstar’s ‘unintelligent, crass’ Jordan to a house party, addresses Animal comparisons: ‘He isn’t well-raised’

In the latest edition of Expresso, Imtiaz Ali shared which of his film characters he'd like to hypothetically invite to his house party.

After the controversial film Animal was released in the theatres, it made a lot of noise for the wrong reasons. A section of the audience felt that the film, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, glorified toxic masculinity and violence. A lot of people also pointed out the parallels between Ranbir Kapoor’s character in the film, to the one he played in Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar. In the latest edition of Expresso, Imtiaz Ali was asked if he would take indirect responsibility for Animal, but he said that he hasn’t watched the film yet.

He said, “I have still not watched Animal, unfortunately. However, this I have heard a few times. I cannot give you an accurate answer about it. In the character of Janardan Jakhar in Rockstar, there is crassness. He is not an intelligent guy at all. He is not cerebral. He is not decent and he is not well-raised or well-mannered. So, if that is what goes on in Animal then there is something to compare about.”

The filmmaker also shared that if Jordan existed in real life, he would have become a very corrupt music industry head after the events of the film. During the same interaction, Imtiaz Ali was also asked which of his characters he’d hypothetically invite to a house party. The filmmaker immediately said, “All the girls should be there,” but noted that all his male characters would probably not get an invite. He said, “There should be Geet, Veera, Tara, these are all fun ladies. If you run short on booze, you can ask them to take it easy, they are drunk on life anyway. But, the men you got to be careful.”

Citing the example of Jordan, the filmmaker said, “Are you going to call Jordan? You have to be careful. You need to keep in check if there is enough security. You will have to think if he is going to self-obsess.”

Mentioning Tamasha’s protagonist Ved, the filmmaker said, “Is Ved from Tamasha going to come and talk about his life problems? Because we are not interested really. We have problems of our own. The men, I think, we can avoid almost all of them except for Jai from Love Aaj Kal. You can avoid the men, and invite all the girls.”

With Rockstar having developed a cult following in the years since its release in 2011, Imtiaz was also asked if Nargis Fakhri’s character Heer had to die in the film because Indian audiences cannot accept a cheating woman as a spouse? To which he immediately replied, “No, nothing to do with that.”

“I saw the film recently twice. This time when I watched it, I realised that the Indian audience had accepted the fact that these two guys are together and she is someone else’s wife that’s why the whole scene of ‘chaadar ke andar’ worked. However, I think the story wouldn’t be complete if she would be alive. I think the story is about fate and curse that you actually get what you ask for. That is the biggest tragedy that’s possible, and if he asked for a heartbreak he should get it, and the heartbreak would only happen if she passed”, explained Imtiaz.

Rockstar, directed by Imtiaz Ali, opened to positive reviews upon its release in 2011. The film earned over Rs 100 crore worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of the year. It was recently re-released in theatres, and made over Rs 5 crore.
