Imtiaz Ali’s next film Amar Singh Chamkila stars Diljit Dosanjh in the titular role. Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila, whose songs are still popular after 35 years of his death, was killed at the young age of 27. The filmmaker said that Chamkila’s songs were very different from late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, who was also gunned down on May 29, 2022.
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, when the music of the two singers was compared, Imtiaz said, “The songs that I have heard of Sidhu Moosewala are very different in texture from Chamkila, but one thing is common that they were both extremely popular in the grassroots and they were very influential and they did talk about what was happening around them. So those were the common things.”
In his research on Amar Singh Chamkila, Imtiaz Ali learned several things about him, one of which was that Chamkila could ‘never refuse his audience’.
The filmmaker said, “Chamkila was a slave of his audience. He wanted to always please his audience. He could never refuse his audience. This is why he ended up doing more than 365 shows in one year and sometimes these shows were not happening at the same venue. He had to travel to different villages to do these.”
In the film, Parineeti Chopra plays the role of Amar Singh Chamkila’s wife Amarjot, who was also shot along with the singer in 1988.
Amar Singh Chamkila will stream from April 12 on Netflix.
