IFFI 2024 winners list: Toxic wins Best film; Clément Favreau, Vesta Matulyte and Ieva Rupeikaite bag acting honours

The 55th International Film Festival of India closed with Toxic winning Best Film, while Clément Favreau bagged Best Actor for Holy Cow.

International Film Festival of India (IFFI)The closing ceremony of 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) was organised on Thursday.

After an impressive nine-day run showcasing over 200 films from 75 countries, the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) came to a grand conclusion at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa. The festival offered a vibrant lineup of masterclasses and panel discussions featuring prominent industry figures such as Manoj Bajpayee, Ranbir Kapoor, AR Rahman, Pankaj Tripathi, and more.

The closing ceremony was a celebration of cinematic excellence, with the Lithuanian drama Toxic winning the coveted Best Film Award. While Clément Favreau, Vesta Matulyte and Ieva Rupeikaite bagged the acting honours, Australian filmmaker Phillip Noyce was honoured with the prestigious Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award.

Saulė Bliuvaitė’s directorial debut Toxic bagged the Best Film Award at the 55th International Film Festival of India. The Lithuanian drama revolves around the story of two teens who dream of an escape from the bleakness of their hometown. They form a unique bond at a local modeling school, where the promise of a better life pushes girls to violate their bodies in extreme ways.

Best Actor Female

The Best Actor Female Award was shared by Vesta Matulyte and Ieva Rupeikaite for their stellar performances in Toxic. Their portrayal of two young women navigating the complexities of ambition and desperation added depth and authenticity to the film’s narrative.

Best Actor Male

Clément Favreau won the award for his performance in the French film Holy Cow. He played the lead role in filmmaker Louise Courvoisier’s directorial debut, which is a delightful coming-of-age comedy-drama that follows 18-year-old Totone, whose carefree life is turned upside down as he takes on responsibility for his younger sister.

Best Director

Romanian filmmaker Bogdan Muresanu received the Best Director Award for his work on The New Year That Never Came. Set against the backdrop of the 1989 Revolution, this tragicomedy unfolds over a single day as characters seek love, freedom, and meaning in a world overshadowed by fear and absurdity.

The award was bagged by the French filmmaker Louise Courvoisier’s directorial debut Holy Cow.

Best Web Series (OTT)

The Marathi series Lampan won the Best Web Series Award. Based on the works of Prakash Narayan Sant, the series beautifully captures the life of a young boy navigating the challenges of childhood while exploring themes of identity, community, and empowerment. Its nostalgic portrayal of simpler times resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike.

ICFT UNESCO Gandhi Medal 2024

Swedish director Levan Akin’s Crossing was awarded the ICFT UNESCO Gandhi Medal. This poignant drama examines class, gender, and sexuality through the lens of Lia, a retired teacher searching for her niece Tekla. Set in Istanbul, the film provides a heartfelt exploration of the city’s transgender community.

Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award

The prestigious Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Phillip Noyce. The acclaimed Australian director, known for his exceptional storytelling, has helmed over 19 feature films spanning various genres. His notable works include Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, and The Quiet American.

Best Debut Feature Film of a Director

Familiar Touch by American filmmaker Sarah Friedland was declared the Best Debut Feature Film of a Director. The film delves into the poignant journey of an octogenarian woman as she transitions to life in an assisted living facility.

Best Debut Director of Indian Feature Film

Navjyot Bandiwadekar bagged the Best Debut Director Award for his Marathi film Gharat Ganpati. Featuring a stellar cast that includes Nikita Dutta, Bhushan Pradhan, Ajinkya Deo, Ashwini Bhave, Sanjay Mone, Shubhangi Latkar, and Shubhangi Gokhale, the film is set in the picturesque Konkan region. It beautifully depicts the Gharat family’s cherished tradition of celebrating the Gauri Ganpati festival.

The closing ceremony of the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) saw several celebrities in attendance including Rashmika Mandanna, Shriya Saran, Sukumar, Dil Raju, Rupali Ganguly, Ritwik Bhowmik, Mame Khan, Amaal Mallik and several other luminaries.
