For several years now, many technicians working in the Hindi film industry have been talking about how many Bollywood actors lack command over Hindi, the very language in which they are making films. Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Anurag Kashyap, and many others have consistently raised concerns over the industry’s heavy reliance on English, which, in many ways, has also distanced the masses from both the films and the actors themselves. Now, Huma Qureshi has added her voice to the conversation. In a recent interview, Huma pointed out that people on a Hindi films et largely communicate in English, and even the scripts for Hindi films are written in English.

In a chat with Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube channel, Huma said, “The problem in our industry now is that even though it is the Hindi film industry, half the people don’t really know Hindi properly. In fact, most of the communication on sets happens in English, and even our scripts are printed in English. My question is who are you making these films for? You are making them for a Hindi-speaking audience, right? So at least speak the language! That is why so many people don’t have a proper command over it. They can neither speak English well nor Hindi. So what do you actually speak?”

Previously, in an interview with Times of India, Huma revealed that she has an inherent “superpower” where she can pick up a language after spending time with someone who speaks it. “If I spend half an hour or an hour a day with someone, I can start speaking like them,” she said.

In an earlier chat at Times Now Navbharat India Economic Conclave, Nawazuddin mentioned that people in the Hindi film industry are making “gangster shows” but are “casting English-speaking actors in them. He added, “This is the problem that actors from small towns are facing; roles that should have gone to them are going to actors who don’t even know Hindi.”

Huma Qureshi was recently seen in Netflix’s Delhi Crime 3 and Sony LIV’s Maharani Season 4. She was also recently seen in Bayaan, which premiered at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
