Haq is inspired by the 1985 Shah Bano case. The case began with a 62-year-old Muslim woman’s plea for maintenance from her husband after their divorce, sparking a national debate on secularism, minority rights and the need for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

The film opened to positive reviews on Friday. An excerpt from SCREEN’s review of the film read, “Haq does what it sets out to do with clear-eyed empathy, giving us an ordinary woman who found extraordinary strength and resilience to fight for her cause, and created, without ever quite realising it, history.”

Reacting to the positive response to Haq, Yami Gautam took to X to share her appreciation, “A well-intended film finds its audience eventually & vice-versa. Grateful.”
