Gangu Ramsay of the famous Ramsay Brothers passes away after prolonged illness
Legendary filmmaker and cinematographer Gangu Ramsay, of the popular Ramsay Brothers, breathed his last in Mumbai on Sunday. He was 83.

The Indian film industry mourns the loss of Gangu Ramsay, an iconic cinematographer, filmmaker and producer who left an indelible mark on Bollywood. The second eldest son of FU Ramsay, Gangu passed away at the age of 83 on Sunday after a prolonged illness. He breathed his last at Kokilaben Hospital, leaving behind a legacy that inspired generations.
The family issued a statement confirming his demise, “With profound sadness, we announce the passing of one of the Ramsay Brothers, the legendary cinematographer, filmmaker, producer and the second eldest son of FU Ramsay, Gangu Ramsay. He departed from us early this morning at 8 am, at the age of 83, after battling health issues for the past month,” read the statement.
Gangu Ramsay’s creative genius shone through his contributions to over 50 iconic films produced under the Ramsay Brothers’ banner. His work on classic hits like Veerana, Purana Mandir, Bandh Darwaza, Do Gaz Zameen Ke Niche and Samri, among others, showcased his mastery of the craft. Notably, he collaborated with the late Rishi Kapoor on the unforgettable film Khoj.
Gangu’s talent extended beyond the Ramsay Brothers’ productions, as he played an integral role in shaping Saif Ali Khan’s debut film, Ashiq Awara, and worked alongside Akshay Kumar in the popular Khiladi series, which included films such as Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, Sabse Bada Khiladi, Mr and Mrs Khiladi, Pandav and Mr Bond.
Moreover, Gangu Ramsay made a lasting impact on the television industry with the groundbreaking Zee Horror Show, captivating audiences for over eight years. His other notable works on Zee TV include Saturday Suspense, Naagin and Zimbo.
Gangu’s influence transcended geographical boundaries, as he worked with eminent actors such as Vishnuvardhan in the Kannada film industry. Despite his passing, Gangu Ramsay’s remarkable body of work will continue to inspire and guide aspiring filmmakers for years to come.
“Today, we bid farewell to a visionary whose work will continue to inspire generations to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” read an excerpt from the statement.
