Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, who enjoyed a short but successful stint in the Hindi film industry, recently opened up about his life as a diabetic and how people would tell him to not talk about it as it could come across as his weakness. Fawad shared that he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 17 and that caused a paradigm shift in his life.

In conversation with YouTube channel FreeStyle Middle East, Fawad said that when he was 17, he got a bout of high fever and lost around 10 kgs in just eight days. “I used to be 65 kgs and went down to 55 kgs at the age of 17,” he said. When he went to the doctor, he found that his blood sugar was 600 and was immediately checked in to the hospital. “I was given insulin and I have been on insulin since the age of 17 and today, I am 41 so it has been a career in Diabetes for 24 years,” he said.

Fawad recalled that period of his life and said that it wasn’t until a few days after his diagnosis that he actually realised that he had to completely alter his lifestyle to accommodate his condition. “To be very honest, when I was in the hospital it didn’t hit me as hard as it hit my father. My father’s a very emotionally stable person. My mother said that it was probably only the second time, once was when his brother passed away and then it was this,” he recalled.

He further shared, “First 2-3 days, it didn’t really hit me. I think it was a trip back from Rawalpindi once. I was sitting in the backseat and it was the first time I think I broke down and I started crying and I was like ‘why did this happen to me?'”

Fawad said that it became a part of his life to carry insulin everywhere he went and he had to constantly monitor his blood sugar every few hours. “When my sugar gets low it feels like your soul is being sucked out. I would sometimes fall on the floor and its hard to breathe. I would sweat. There was a point where one of my eyes would start to roll up. Like one would stay here and the other one would start rolling up, so I had no control over that as well,” he shared.

The Ae Dil Hai Mushkil actor said that people need to be more aware about such conditions and even though a lot of people are suffering from the condition, not many are aware as to what should be done in case of an emergency.
