Diljit Dosanjh’s much-anticipated film Punjab ’95 has hit a roadblock with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The singer recently addressed the issue during an Instagram live session. Director Honey Trehan has been grappling with the CBFC for over a year, as the board has reportedly demanded significant cuts in the film. The CBFC had initially suggested 120 cuts to the film.
During his Instagram live, Diljit spoke in Punjabi about his stance on the film’s release, stating, “I hope the film gets released in India soon. I will support only that film that will be released fully without any cuts. If you release the film without cuts I will come, otherwise with cuts it doesn’t matter. I hope some solution will come out and it will release in Punjab.” He also shared that the potential of Punjab’95 will decline if it is released with cuts and it simply defeats the purpose of the film’s message.
Honey Tehren also shared Diljit’s this clip on his Instagram story and showed support for the singer-actor. Tehren wrote, “Chaddiyaan kallan. Panjab’95 will not have my name as a director too if there will be any cut. I don’t support the unreasonable and politically coloured demands of cbfc. I stand by my film and by my team. I will never let down their faith in me. Justice will prevail soon and I hope the world sees the uncut film soon. Immense respect for Jaswant Singh Khalra ji’s martyrdom”.
Punjab ’95 is based on the life and activism of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a Sikh rights advocate who dedicated his life to exposing human rights violations and the Punjab Police’s extrajudicial killings of Sikh youth during the militancy in the early ’90s.
On January 17, Diljit had shared the film’s trailer and announced that its uncut version would be released internationally on February 7, 2025, in multiple countries, excluding India. However, the release was postponed once again for undisclosed reasons. Diljit had also shared this update on Instagram. The film is produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP and also stars Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh and Suvinder Vicky in pivotal roles.
