It’s not every day that you become a worldwide sensation even before you turn 10, and it doesn’t happen to everyone. Darsheel Safary was one of the chosen ones as his first project Taare Zameen Par put him on the map. It might seem like a dream coming true but the young man, now 26 years old, shared how it was claustrophobic for him to deal with the pressures and even the overwhelming love.

Speaking to Siddharth Kanan, the actor said that he not only had external forces but also inner pressure to prove himself. Darsheel said that as everyone around him expected to do wonders, it would leave him worried if he’d ever be able to match up to it. “I was also juggling with studies and so was selective. I wanted to take the best step possible. After school was over, I decided to take a break and introspect about what I wanted from life,” he said.

The actor said that this is when he discovered theatre and took a good seven-eight years sabbatical and performed only on stage. He also traveled and found the ‘inner actor’ in him and then started looking for scripts. Darsheel is presently promoting his film Hukus Bukus, about a young man who idolises Sachin Tendulkar. He shared how he found a ‘passion’ in the writing and also realised that the character had a similar arc as him.

As the host asked him about dealing with the love and attention that came his way, Darsheel said that he did not understand it initially. He shared that he was just 10 years old and as people would hold him out of love, it became overwhelming for him. “I would go home and cry every day. There were people of my parents, and grandparents’ age, who would come up to me and show so much love. Everything would get registered in my mind but I did not understand what was happening. What’s the hype about?” he said.

Darsheel said that he watched the film multiple times and even slept during a couple of screenings. It was only after the buzz was over that he felt that pressure. The film, also starring Aamir Khan was about a young boy who suffered from dyslexia. As his parents don’t understand his problem, they force him to a boarding school, where he meets a teacher, whose empathetic ways heal him.

He added that almost for a year, he would go home and cry, before discussing the day with his parents. He said he would attend events that had people who connected emotionally to the film. However, he being too young to understand it, would get overwhelmed. “When I started understanding it, I connected the emotions to my profession and have started using it in my life. You can only be a good actor once you learn to let it go,” he concluded.
