Actor Chhaya Kadam is enjoying a golden period in her career. The actor was a part of Payal Kapadia’s Grand Prix winning film All We Imagine As Light and was applauded for her work in Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies and Kunal Kemmu’s Madgaon Express. Now, in a recent interview, Chhaya spoke about the time when she worked with Sanjay Leela Bhansali in his film Gangubai Kathiawadi and said that people speak more about the director’s anger and not enough about how he gives enough liberty to his actors.

In a chat with Zoom, Chhaya said that Bhansali is indeed a perfectionist who pays attention to the minutest of details. She laughed and said that she had heard a lot about his on set temperament and even witnessed some of it but later felt like he has the right to express himself that way. “I felt that he has the right… If he has thought so much about his film, and if we come in the end and ruin it, then how will it be okay for him?” she said.

She further opened up, “I saw some things there… when he got upset. I thought ‘This is not how it works’ and ‘I haven’t worked on such a set before’. But afterwards, we just spoke once and everything was clear after that. Post that, it was smooth sailing.”

Chhaya recalled that during one of the dance sequences, Bhansali gave her the chance to choreograph for her own character. She shared that even though the choreographer had prepared some steps, Bhansali wasn’t convinced with it so he asked Chhaya how would Rashmibai perform in a dance sequence. “The choreographer had some other steps for Rashmibai. Sir saw it once and he left. He came back and asked me how would Rashmibai perform? Then I thought about it and I showed it to him. He really liked it. He gives a lot of freedom. People only talk about his anger but getting this kind of freedom is also very important,” she said.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali recently released his first web series Heeramandi on Netflix. He is now working on his next feature film Love & War starring Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal and Ranbir Kapoor.
