Chhaava box office collection day 39: Before being hit by Empuraan and Sikandar storms, Vicky Kaushal film records lowest single-day figure

Chhaava box office collection day 39: With several highly anticipated films set to hit the screens in the coming days — including Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Mohanlal-led L2: Empuraan and AR Murugadoss’ Salman Khan-starrer Sikandar — director Laxman Utekar’s Chhaava, featuring Vicky Kaushal, Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna in the lead roles, has entered the final stretch of its theatrical run. Although it initially showed promise of surpassing the domestic and global records set by Stree 2, the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2024, its momentum has reduced significantly in recent days. Now, the only chance Chhaava has to overtake Amar Kaushik’s horror-comedy — at least in the domestic market — is if Sikandar underperforms in the Hindi belt, allowing the historical action drama to retain its screens.

On Monday, Chhaava recorded an India nett collection of just Rs 1.85 crore, according to early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk, registering its lowest daily earnings to date. While the Hindi version contributed Rs 1.75 crore to Monday’s total, the Telugu edition added just Rs 10 lakh. This also marked a 60.22 per cent drop in the historical actioner’s daily earnings compared to its Sunday collection of Rs 4.65 crore.

Although Chhaava’s total domestic nett (Rs 585.1 crore) is just Rs 12.89 crore shy of Stree 2 (Rs 597.99 crore), it only has two more days left before being hit by the Empuraan toofan, which has already shattered multiple pre-sales records in the country. While Empuraan hits the screens on Thursday, Sikandar is set for release on Sunday, further reducing Chhaava’s chances of survival. With the Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna-starrer’s overseas collection stuck at a modest Rs 90.50 crore — bringing its global total to Rs 785.5 crore — it is also certain that the movie won’t be able to surpass the worldwide gross of the Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor-starrer (Rs 857.15 crore).

On Monday, Chhaava recorded an overall occupancy rate of 8.15 per cent in the Hindi market. The morning shows started with 5.35 per cent occupancy and the rate kept improving, though nominally, as the day progressed, rising to 8.75 per cent in the afternoon, 8.83 per cent in the evening and peaking at 9.67 per cent during night screenings.

Based on the life of Sambhaji Maharaj, the second ruler of the Maratha Empire, Chhaava is the highest-grossing Indian film of 2025. In her review of the movie, SCREEN’s Shubhra Gupta wrote: “The torture porn in the climax of Vicky Kaushal’s film reminds you of the systematic flaying of Jesus in ‘The Passion of Christ’.”
