Bobby Deol made his Bollywood debut with Barsaat. But the film faced many hurdles before it was released in theatres in 1995. In a recent interview, Bobby revealed that Barsaat took five years to make because Shekhar Kapur, who was supposed to helm his debut film, left the project for Bandit Queen after 27 days of shooting. Thereafter, filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi came on board, but further script changes in the film kept delaying its release.
Speaking at the Jagran Film Festival, Bobby said, “I started shooting for the film very early and Shekhar Kapur was the director. We shot for the film for 27 days. He then got an offer from Hollywood to make Bandit Queen. Shekhar said, ‘I will do Bandit Queen and come back to do Barsaat,’ But my father told him that he didn’t want to delay it. He told Shekhar, ‘You go do your film, I will find somebody else.’ And I think Rajkumar Santoshi was waiting to direct my film. I got lucky with him.”
This isn’t the first time Bobby has expressed his frustration on the matter. In an earlier interview with Bollywood Hungama, the actor revealed that he had developed a friendship with Shekhar before the filmmaker opted out of his film. “It was really frustrating. I had developed a good friendship with him. It happens when you’re working with someone and you spend a year-and-a-half with them every day. I kept telling Shekhar, ‘Why don’t you finish the film?’ but he had a bigger opportunity. What’s meant to be will be,” he said.
Barsaat also marked the debut of Twinkle Khanna. It was produced by Dharmendra.
