Bhagyashree thought she was being set up for marriage with Sooraj Barjatya: ‘Bachche doosre kamre mein…?’
Bhagyashree and Salman Khan debuted opposite each other with Sooraj Barjatya's Maine Pyar Kiya, released in 1989.

Actor Bhagyashree looked back at her humorous first interaction with filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya, who cast her in the Maine Pyar Kiya opposite Salman Khan. In an interview, Bhagyashree said that the first time they met, she briefly thought that they were going to be set up in an arranged marriage by their parents.
“It was so funny. Raj babu, Sooraj ji’s dad, knew my dad socially. He called up my father and said, ‘Aapse milna hai, main apne bete ko leke aa raha hoon (I want to meet you, I’m bringing my son along). Apparently, both our fathers must have had this discussion earlier. We weren’t aware of it. They laid out a spread in our garden, and then they summoned me. Sooraj ji and his father were sitting on one side, and my parents were sitting on the other. Raj babu said, ‘Mera beta aapki beti se kuch baat karna chahta hai, bachche doosre kamre mein jaake baat karein (My son wants to talk to your daughter, can they speak privately)?”
Bhagyashree was stunned. She thought their parents were setting her up with Sooraj. But her concerns were alleviated immediately, when Sooraj’s father mentioned that he was, in fact, already married. Sooraj’s father told everybody, “My son wants to become a director, but I told him that he must first get married. And now that he’s married, he is ready to make his film.”
Bhagyashree and Salman became overnight stars after Maine Pyar Kiya emerged as a hit. But she was secretly married during production, and she soon gave up on her career in the films to focus on her family. She recently returned to acting, and appeared in a cameo in Salman’s Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ka Jaan.
