Days after uncertainty, the formal announcement of an alliance between the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) will be made at 12 pm on Wednesday, Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said Tuesday. Taking to X, he also shared a photograph of the formerly estranged cousins greeting each other.

This would mean that for the first time since 2006, when Raj stepped away from the undivided Shiv Sena and formed the MNS, the two Thackerays will engage in election campaigning as a team.

However, the parties are yet to divulge details about the seat-sharing formula. According to sources, both the Sena (UBT) and the MNS are in the final stage of finalising the seat-sharing formula for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Voting for the BMC polls, along with elections to 28 other municipal corporations in the state, is slated for January 15. The results will be declared on January 16.

The Thackeray cousins began to mend their ties after the BJP-led Maharashtra government decided to implement a three-language formula in primary school by including Hindi. The decision was unanimously opposed by the Opposition parties as well as the MNS. Uddhav and Raj were first seen sharing the stage at a programme in Worli to celebrate their victory after the state government decided to revoke the move to make Hindi mandatory in schools.

Later, when all Opposition parties joined the protest march on the issue of ‘vote chori’, the Thackerays were seen together on the stage where they delivered speeches.

While the Sena (UBT) is part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition along with the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (SP), the Congress has already announced that it would contest the polls independently, citing Uddhav’s decision to join hands with the MNS. The party cited the MNS’s alleged use of violence against North Indians and its anti-Muslim rhetoric while refusing to ally with it.

Meanwhile, the NCP (SP) is in talks with the Uddhav Sena over the seat-sharing formula, and a decision is yet to be taken in this regard.
