The attack on Saif Ali Khan and his family made headlines earlier this year, but some years prior, his sister Soha had a similar experience at her own house. In a new interview, Soha said that her then-partner and now-husband, Kunal Kemmu, heard a noise and got up to investigate. He discovered that a man had broken into their house and entered their bedroom. Kunal had a scuffle with the intruder, who fell off the balcony of their home. Soha recalled the terrifying experience, as she spoke about women’s safety in Mumbai and Delhi.

In an interview with Hauterrfly, Soha recalled that when she was growing up in Delhi, it used to be completely dark at night because there were no streetlights. She made sure to travel in groups, and to adhere to curfews set by her parents. She also said that she was privileged enough to not have to use public transport, where many women she knows have been exposed to indecent behaviour. “It was unsafe,” she said.

Asked if she has ever experienced an untoward incident herself, Soha said, “In Mumbai, our house was broken into. Kunal caught the thief, and took her to jail. The thief was in our bedroom. We were sleeping, it was 4 in the morning. Kunal’s hand was in cast; he was shooting for Go Goa Gone. We heard a sound, but you often hear sounds in Mumbai, and we didn’t think much of it. But Kunal felt he must investigate; he was very attentive. He began looking around the room, and he pulled the curtain open, and there was a man there with a hanky on his face.”

Soha continued, “Kunal kicked him, and they fell into the balcony. I was in the room, trying to remember the number for the police. I called the police, and they answered. By then, Kunal came back inside, and said, ‘I think he’s dead’. The man had actually fallen off the balcony. He wasn’t dead, but he’d hurt his back. He couldn’t move, and then the police came.”

Earlier this year, a man broke into Saif and his wife Kareena Kapoor’s Bandra home with the intention to rob it. Saif tackled the man, and managed to overpower him. He sustained injuries in the scuffle, but the man escaped. He was subsequently apprehended by the police. In an interview with ETimes following the attack, Saif confessed that he was lackadaisical about security before, but resolved to take it more seriously following the intrusion. “Maybe I’m meant to do a few more good films… have some more nice times with family and friends. Do some more charity,” he said.
