From 2007’s Atonement to 2018’s Where Hands Touch, there is no dearth of Hollywood romantic dramas set in World War 2. However, there are only a handful of Hindi films that have explored this subject. Breaking the mold, director Nitesh Tiwari has added a pinch of WW2 history in his upcoming love story, Bawaal. The film revolves around the character of a history teacher from Lucknow who embarks on a WW2 trail in Europe only to discover the war within him. The trailer of Bawaal was released on Sunday.

The trailer begins with introduction of Varun Dhawan’s character Ajay Dixit aka Ajju bhaiya. He is a history teacher in Lucknow who has established a fake public image and holds it very dear to himself. He says, “Beeta mahaul aisa banao ki logo ko mahaul yaad rahe, result nahi.” It is because of his fake image that he receives respect from the school’s principal despite being incompetent at his job. As the story unfolds, he meets a beautiful, homely Nisha (Janhvi Kapoor), who can further help in enhancing his image. The duo quickly tie the knot and jet off for a trip to Europe.

On their journey, Ajay tries to impart his worldly wisdom to Nisha, acting overconfident and attempting to shape her according to his vision. However, the narrative takes a dark turn when the couple arrives in Germany and embarks on a World War 2 trail. The trailer offers glimpses of wartime scenes, further revealing the conflict that arises between Ajay and Nisha. Ajay’s disappointment in his wife becomes apparent and she accuses him of being “selfish” for solely focusing on his image. The tagline reads, “Every love story has its own war,” emphasising the underlying theme of internal battles in the film.

Varun Dhawan shared details about his character at Bawaal’s trailer launch in Dubai. He said, “Despite his popularity, Ajju is constantly warring with circumstances beyond his control. A character so intricately woven but literally a bawaal within and all around, that it will hold a special place in my heart. I just cannot wait for the audience from all across the globe to watch and experience this unconventionally beautiful romantic tale of Ajju and Nisha.”

Janhvi Kapoor talked about her character in the film and said, “Nisha is seemingly a simple girl with hopes and dreams, but she’s so endearing that she makes you want to feel every emotion that she is experiencing. In Bawaal, Nisha is taking a journey that will make you look beyond the surface into her life, her love, and everything in between.”

Bawaal is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala’s Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment in collaboration with Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and Nitesh Tiwari’s Earthsky Pictures. It will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on July 21.
