Actor Manoj Bajpayee will soon be seen playing the role of advocate PC Solanki in director Apoorv Singh Karki’s upcoming film Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai. The filmmaker says says that while shooting Manoj was a great experience, one particular shot left him stumped.

The film, which will have a direct OTT release on May 23 on Zee5, is inspired by real events. Shot in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, Apoorv recalls a day when Manoj’s performance felt divine, inspired. He tells indianexpress.com, “There is a shot in the film when there is a very weak moment for both the characters in the film. The child is very stressed because it was a very tough journey for the kid to come to court hearings every day. So, there comes a point in the film where she says that she is very stressed and feels like dying. Manoj’s character then chants Mahadev’s name and tells her not to worry.”

Apoorv further explains, painting quite a picture as he says, “So, both of them are standing and behind them is Mehrangarh fort and a wide shot is there, with the camera panning up and Manoj shouts loudly, ‘Har har Mahadev’ and at that moment all of us had goosebumps and it really was a divine intervention shooting that scene. I think when you see that scene in the film, it will stay with the audience for a long time.”

Director Apoorv says shooting this scene in the film gave him goosebumps.

The film ran into legal trouble when it received a legal notice by self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted of a similar crime. The notice termed the film “highly objectionable” and “defamatory” towards him, with a potential to “tarnish his reputation and hit sentiments of his devotees.”

Apoorv says that they spent 6-8 months just researching and writing the film and the overcoming all the challenges.

“The story was already on a public domain. When the story came to us, we spent a lot of time with PC Solanki, on whose character this story is based. He spent 6-8 months on it and we researched a lot about this, his rights were with us , I think the biggest challenge was the research,” he said.

The director added, “So, first it took hard work to write a good script because when you bring such a story, the biggest challenge is to bring realism and entertainment together. We have to entertain the audience in a way that our message gets delivered. With the help of Suparn (Varma), Vinod (Bhanushali) sir and Deepak (Kingrani), we managed to create a great screenplay. Once that was in place then there is a the regular process of reading and we discussed with Manoj sir. We sat down for screenplay, reading discussion. “
