‘AR Rahman should thank me for allowing him to work in Hollywood’: Ashutosh Gowariker says Slumdog Millionaire got in the way of their partnership

Ashutosh Gowariker opened up about working with AR Rahman, and said that the composer owes him a debt of gratitude.

rahman ashutosh gowarikerAR Rahman has composed music for several of Ashutosh Gowariker's films.

Director Ashutosh Gowariker reflected on his long working relationship with composer AR Rahman, with whom he has collaborated on all but three of his films. He said that Rahman was supposed to compose the music for his 2008 release What’s Your Raashee? but he couldn’t because he was getting Hollywood offers. It was in 2008 that the film Slumdog Millionaire was released, winning Rahman two Oscars. In an interview, Gowariker said that he tells Rahman that he deserves thanks for ‘allowing’ him to pursue Hollywood offers.

Chatting with Mirchi, he said, “Rahman and I had to take a gap after Jodhaa Akbar because he started getting Hollywood offers. He was offered Slumdog Millionaire. I wanted him to do What’s Your Raashee? as well, but it couldn’t happen. Even today, I sometimes tell Rahman, ‘You should thank me for the Oscars you’ve won, because I allowed you to go to Hollywood’.”

Asked how he communicates with Rahman, Gowariker said, “Rahman is a very sharp man, and he immediately grasps the crux of the idea. He is able to visualise the situations immediately. It takes time, because ultimately, he’s catering to you. He isn’t making his own album. But he deserves that time.”

Rahman recently spoke about working on Slumdog Millionaire in secret, because people had advised him not to. “I met Danny Boyle in Mumbai, and he really wanted me to do the music for the film. I called my agent, who said, ‘Reject it straight away! He is very complicated, works with multiple composers and might throw your music out.’ But I remembered Danny’s face, which was full of love and respect. I thought these two things weren’t tallying!” the composer recalled at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne recently. Slumdog Millionaire ended up winning the Best Picture Oscar, but Rahman worked on only a couple of Hollywood projects afterwards.
