Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma announced their new philanthropic venture at the recent Indian Sports Honour awards. While the celebrity couple enjoyed several light-hearted moments as well, they took to the stage and expressed their desire to give back to society. Announcing SEVVA, Virat said that the foundation’s name contains the initials of not only his and Anushka’s names, but also of their daughter, Vamika.

Quoting Khalil Ghibran, Virat said that the truest form of giving back isn’t donating material wealth, but sharing a part of yourself. “We have always found it difficult to talk about it, because we are just instruments, just a means through which the bounty of life can reach those who need it,” Anushka said.

She continued, “So, with head bowed in gratitude, we are offering ‘seva’.” Virat explained, “This stands for ‘SE’ of self, ‘V’ of Virat, ‘V’ of Vamika, and ‘A’ of Anushka, as ‘seva’ is always from self of self.” Anushka said, “Virat, Vamika and I will contribute in every way we can. We will do it as one, as a family, for the family that we belong to, the world that we live in, the society that has provided for us and loved us, and the universe with which we are all connected.”

Virat said that he will continue to provide scholarships in sports and continue to sponsor athletes, and Anushka said that she will continue to work for animal welfare, and together, they’ll work for women and child welfare. Virat said that Vamika will join them on the journey, presumably when she’s older.

Anushka and Virat are vegans, and are often spotted at the ashram of their spiritual guru. At the same event, Virat also alluded to his past, and said that he used to enjoy partying, but since he no longer drinks, he is more reserved now.
