Since Nov 26, 41 convicts, undertrials who skipped parole and furlough sent back to prison: Gujarat DGP

Of the 41 prisoners, six had been absconding for more than ten years, nine were absconding for more than five years.

In a special drive launched by the Gujarat police, 111 prisoners including 41 convicts who had jumped parole or furlough were apprehended and sent back to jail, Director General of Police Vikas Sahay said in a video statement on Monday.

The drive called called “Operation Karawaas” was launched on November 26, where the state police had been directed to search and apprehend especially those who has been convicted for murder, attempt to murder, rape and sexual assault of minors.

Of the 41 prisoners, Sahay who described them as “dangerous” said six had been absconding for more than ten years, nine were absconding for more than five years, and in three cases, these convicts had been missing for more than 20 years.

The Indian Express on December 4 had written about the case of a couple who were booked in separate murder cases in Surat, had jumped parole and furlough , got married and had settled in Haryana.

The Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Gujarat police arrested the couple identified as Mohammad Riyaz Mansuri, 38, who is from Bihar and Kinnary Patel, 36, a native of Valsad, from Panipat in Haryana where they have been living since 2019. They were brought back to the Surat central jail along with their five-year-old son who has been kept in a separate room.

According to Sahay, the police also found that 25 people had already died whose names would be deleted from the records.

Another 41 undertrial prisoners – who had skipped bail – were also returned to judicial custody.
