Anurag Kashyap hits back at those who call him ‘nashedi’; says he hates Gangs of Wasseypur: ‘Want to hit them with a shoe’

Anurag Kashyap said that even if his films don’t sell a single ticket, the losses incurred are still less than those of the 80% of films that flop every year.

Anurag Kashyap, known for speaking his mind without hesitation, recently didn’t hold back in responding to those who label him a “nashedi” (drug addict). In a promotional clip from the interview released by Digital Commentary, Kashyap can be seen addressing the criticism directly. He said, “Meri aankehin baadi baadi hai na, saari problem iski wajha se hai, iski wajah se hi log mujhe ganjedi aur nashedi patani kya kay bolte hai. Ab ye meri galti thodi na hai ki main inn aankhon ke saath paida hua hoon.” (My eyes are big, right? All the problems are because of them. That’s why people call me a pothead or a drug addict. It’s not my fault that I was born with these eyes.) Kashyap didn’t stop there. In the promo, he also addressed the claims that he has never delivered a commercially successful hit, even as his latest film Nishaanchi underperformed at the box office.

Responding to this criticism, he said: “Meri film ne ek ticket bhi nahi bhecha tabhi unka nuksaan jo hai na saal ki 80% films jo flop hoti hai usse kum hai” (Even if my film didn’t sell a single ticket, their loss is still less than the 80% of films that flop every year). In the same conversation, Kashyap opened up about Gangs of Wasseypur, his ultimate cult classic that is beloved by fans but despised by him. He said, “Mujhe Wasseypur se sakht nafrat hai. Jabhi koi aadmi mujhe bolta hai na Wasseypur wale toh mera mann karta hai joota nikal ke maroon.” (I have a deep hatred for Wasseypur. Whenever someone calls me ‘the Wasseypur guy,’ I feel like taking off my shoe and hitting them.)

He also used the opportunity to address those who criticize him but never show up in theatre to watch his movies: “Agar tum meri film cinema hall mein dekhne jate hote toh mera ghar usse chal raha hota? Par mera ghar tumhari wajah se nahi chal raha hai.” (If you had gone to watch my film in a cinema hall, my house would have been running. But my house isn’t running because of you.)

Kashyap’s Nishaanchi is now available to stream for rent on Prime Video, with Part 2 slated for release in theaters early next year. He also has Bobby Deol’s Bandar in his kitty, yet to be released, along with his older feature Kennedy, which has still not seen the light of day.
