Actor Abhimanyu Singh, who worked with director Anurag Kashyap on the film Gulaal, recalled a story about the filmmaker that he wasn’t sure he should tell, but swore every word of it is true. While shooting Gulaal, he said, the crew got into an altercation with a local cop, who refused to let them shoot. When the cop became disrespectful, Kashyap blew his lid and began to abuse the policemen, taunting them to shoot him.

In an interview with The Lallantop, Abhimanyu Singh recalled how Anurag cast him in the crime drama, which was released in 2009 and also starred Raj Singh Chaudhary, Kay Kay Menon, Deepak Dobriyal and Piyush Mishra. Asked what it is like to work with the filmmaker, who is known for his firebrand public image, Abhimanyu said that Anurag is actually quite a calm person on set. He then proceeded to narrate the story about the time when Anurag completely lost his cool.

He said in Hindi, “This was a dangerous incident, and I don’t know if I should tell this story. During Gulaal, a production controller had bribed a policeman to allow us to film for 30 minutes one evening. That policeman’s shift ended and he left with the money. Another cop took his place. The new cop was aggressive, maybe he was in a bad mood. He told us to get out, and disrespected us.”

Abhimanyu said that the crew stepped out of the station, and decided to abandon the scene altogether. The cop saw them outside and came at them again, telling them to leave the premises. Abhimanyu continued, “He yelled at us again, called us names, told us to leave. And that’s all it took for Anurag to blow his lid. He started abusing the police officer to his face. The officer retreated into the station, and we followed him. An assistant tried to restrain Anurag, but he pushed him away. Inside the station, he started abusing all the policemen. Things became so heated that a couple of cops began taking out guns. I was in costume, and the cops probably thought I was some local goon who couldn’t be messed with. Finally, Anurag taunted them, and said, ‘Shoot me, I want to see if you can shoot me’. He threatened to call the media, and the cops eventually gave up, thinking that he is mad.”

Abhimanyu said that later that evening, he heard a loud bang in the hotel they were staying at. “Anurag had punched a wall in anger and broken three fingers,” he said. “On the cast, he wrote in his own blood, ‘Gulaal’.” The next day, it was as if nothing had happened, and the filmmaker was back to his usual ‘cool’ self. “Every word of this is true,” Abhimanyu said.
