Anil Kapoor admits he compares son Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor to other actors, says they have ‘major fights’ about his career choices
Father-son duo Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor and Anil Kapoor talked about their equation and revealed how they deal with creative differences.

Bollywood veteran Anil Kapoor and his son, actor Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor, in a recent interview with the Times of India, shed light on their relationship and how their artistic choices sometimes diverge. The actors discussed their individual journeys in the film industry, comparisons with other Bollywood stars, and how they handle creative differences with utmost honesty.
Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor, who made his Bollywood debut with Mirzya in 2016, has maintained a strong stance when it comes to choosing acting projects, even if it contradicts his father’s point of view.
During the interview, Anil Kapoor admitted to comparing Harsh to other Bollywood actors, but he emphasised that he provides constructive feedback without inflating his son’s ego. He said, “It’s very natural. But I do it in a very positive way. I don’t pump him unnecessarily or inflate his ego. He is so sharp, he knows if I’m praising him excessively. He will ask me ‘Why are you trying? I can see through you.’ So I have to be very real with him, and keep on giving a reality check.”
Not just his father, Harsh’s mother, Sunita Kapoor, also sometimes doesn’t agree with his film choices. The actor starred in the Netflix anthology Ray (2021), which garnered mixed reviews from audiences and critics. After watching the film, Sunita, expressed pride for her son’s performance while also urging him to meet her halfway in terms of a project’s mass appeal.
She wrote on Instagram, “A little late to the party… I saw Spotlight yesterday and I am so proud and overwhelmed by the film and your performance. Glad you are creating an impact by following your path!!! More power to you. Love you (but please can you meet me halfway to my taste and sensibilities.)Please!.”
Responding to her mother’s comment, Harsh said that he doesn’t understand ‘the halfway thing’ and believes in cultivating one’s own taste and clearly pursue it. “That’s what being an artist is about. Over time, you will find excellence through our individuality,” he said.
The creative differences between the father-son duo occasionally lead to heated arguments, as Anil Kapoor admitted during the interview. He said, “We have major fights.” Talking about how differently they deal with an argument, Harsh said, “He (Anil) gets really anxious and can’t sit down and talk,” while he prefers having a detailed chat.
Despite different artistic perspectives, Harsh and his father found common ground as co-stars and producers in the 2022 Netflix film Thar.
