Ameesha Patel reveals that Hrithik Roshan was full of self-doubt, questioned whether he would ever become a star: ‘I was the one who called him Greek God’
Ameesha Patel recalled how Hrithik was full of self-doubt and never imagined he would go on to become such a massive star.

Hrithik Roshan shot to instant fame with his debut film Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, becoming a national heartthrob overnight. But he wasn’t the only one who captured hearts, his co-star, Ameesha Patel, also made her debut in the film and gained immense popularity. Now, in a conversation to Ranveer Allahbadia, Ameesha opened up about her deep-rooted friendship with Hrithik and how their destinies were fused long before the cameras rolled.
“Hrithik and I were childhood friends,” she recalled. “But when I moved to the U.S. for my studies, we lost touch. Our families were close. Rakesh uncle and my dad went to school together. We’d meet at family functions, and even as kids, people used to notice us and we had fans.” She shared a fond memory from her teenage years: “When I was 13, we were at a wedding, and I was dancing. Everyone was watching, and Rakesh Uncle turned to my father and said, ‘Amit, whenever I launch Hrithik, I’ll launch your daughter too. She dances so beautifully, and she’s very pretty.’ That promise, made in such a casual moment, came true almost a decade later. We genuinely ended up debuting together.”
Speaking further about Hrithik’s early days, Ameesha revealed a side of the superstar that many may not know. “Hrithik was always full of self-doubt. He used to wonder if he’d ever become a star. But from day one, I told him, ‘You’re going to be huge. You are a star.’ I had no doubts about him.” She even takes credit for giving him a now-iconic nickname: “I was the one who started calling him ‘Greek God’. I’d tell him, ‘You’re here to stay. You’re going to kill it.’ But he’d always be like, ‘No, this isn’t right… that’s not good enough.’”
Ameesha shared that Hrithik kept a detailed journal about his body and health: “He used to write down everything. Like if something was bothering him physically, so that if he ever went to a doctor, he’d have it all documented. He’s so meticulous and such a perfectionist. Even today, he’s extremely hard on himself.” She reflected on how both of them never really saw themselves the way others did: “We never looked in the mirror and thought we were good-looking. We were always picking out flaws. I’d tell him, ‘What you think is a flaw is actually your strength,’ and he used to say the same to me.”
Ameesha recently experienced a major comeback with the blockbuster success of Gadar 2, where she starred opposite Sunny Deol. Meanwhile, Hrithik’s most recent film, War 2, hasn’t had the smoothest run at the box office.
