It is often said that heroines in Indian cinema have a shelf life. They get married, they have kids, and one fine day, they are not allowed to play lead roles anymore. They are relegated to playing supporting characters, or worse, mothers to men older than them. But these archaic norms are gradually changing as a new brigade of actors takes over Hindi cinema, and one of the brightest talents at the forefront of this evolution is Alia Bhatt. After she and her husband, Ranbir Kapoor, welcomed their daughter Raha, Alia immediately returned to work, starring in Karan Johar’s blockbuster romance, Rocky aur Rani ki Prem Kahaani. She is now gearing up for the release of the action-packed Vasan Bala film, Jigra. However, she is also balancing her professional commitments with motherhood, and in a recent interview with Allure, she opened up about juggling these two roles with panache.
Describing Raha as “naughty and chatty,” Alia said that her daughter is a really bright baby, who has moments of shyness even when being completely her own person. According to Alia, the real challenge is managing the two exacting fields of acting and motherhood. “How do I ping-pong between the two and do them well, but also find a way to carve out time for myself, which I’m not able to do. I’ll be very candid right now—there’s no such thing as me time. I’ve not even been able to get a therapy session for the last two months,” revealed Alia, who has no qualms admitting that becoming a mother has changed her.
In the interview, Alia emphasised the importance of understanding that parenting doesn’t mean owning the life of your children, but being there for them. She also admitted that motherhood left her with oscillating emotions. “Your soul is sort of fulfilled, but you are also always full of fear and nerves because of just wanting to do it right and wanting to do it well,” she said. Sharing the advice that her parents gave her about raising a child, Alia said, “Children come through you. They’re yours, you are a catalyst, you are a source for their life, but their life is not yours. Their life is theirs, and you just need to give them the tools to deal with their life.”
Alia is currently awaiting the release of Jigra, which will be out on October 11. Apart from this project, Alia also has Shiv Rawail’s Alpha, which is the seventh installment of the YRF spy universe, and features Sharvari, Bobby Deol, and Anil Kapoor alongside her.
