The video, which showed two women from the Kuki-Zomi community, surfaced on Twitter on Wednesday. The incident took place in Manipur more than two months ago, when violence first started.
Akshay took to Twitter and wrote he was “disgusted” to see the video and hoped the perpetrators get a punishment so harsh no one dares to repeat this act. A senior police official confirmed to The Indian Express that the incident had taken place on May 4 in Thoubal district and that a zero FIR had been registered in the matter on May 18 in Kangpokpi district. However, while the FIR, on charges including abduction, gangrape and murder against “unknown armed miscreants”, was registered two months ago, there have not been any arrests so far.
“Shaken, disgusted to see the video of violence against women in Manipur. I hope the culprits get such a harsh punishment that no one ever thinks of doing a horrifying thing like this again,” Akshay wrote.

Kiara Advani tweeted that the video has “shaken her to the core” and demanded the strictest punishment be given to those responsible. “The video of violence against women in Manipur is horrifying and has shaken me to the core. I pray the women get justice at the earliest. Those responsible must face the most SEVERE punishment they deserve.

Sonu Sood took to Twitter and wrote, “Manipur video has shaken everyone’s soul. It was humanity that was paraded..not the women💔💔.” While Actor Richa Chadha, quote-tweeting the news of the Manipur violence, fumed at the lawlessness of the state. She wrote, “Shameful! Horrific! Lawless! 😡”
Ashutosh Rana penned a long note on Twitter in Hindi and wrote that history is a witness that whenever “any predator has abducted or sexually assaulted a woman, the entire human race has to pay the price for it.” The actor said it’s time that all political parties “forget their differences” blame-game and unite for the “welfare of the nation”.

Renuka Shahane wondered when will the atrocities in Manipur come to an end and said the video is bound to shake people to “the core”. She tweeted, “Is there no one to stop the atrocities in Manipur? If you are not shaken to the core by that disturbing video of two women, is it even right to call oneself human, let alone Bharatiya or Indian!”

Soni Razdan tagged the official handle of the PMO on Twitter and wrote one must attend to the Manipur crisis with utmost urgency and priority. “Before any one does anything about anything – ATTEND TO MANIPUR first. This is an earnest plea on behalf of the people of Manipur who are being brutalised including women in the most terrible manner 🙏❤️🩹 @PMOIndia @rashtrapatibhvn @GovtOfIndia_”
Actor comedian Vir Das, in a series of tweets, questioned the silence and inaction of political leaders, despite claiming that they could have very well been aware of the incident even before it found its way to Twitter.
“When horrific incidents occur make no mistake, through the system, our leaders are IMMEDIATELY aware. When months later videos go viral, twitter is aware. If leaders only then respond, it’s to twitter, not horrific incidents. They care about online outrage, not real people.”
In a subsequent tweet, the comedian reiterated how leaders and a section of the media sat on the gruesome violence, only to react now. “Read every single leaders statement about Manipur, watch every mainstream anchors bulletin about Manipur, and remind yourself it’s been on their desk since May and they’ve been fully aware this whole time,” he added.
The two women, one in her 20s and the other in her 40s, are from the Kuki-Zomi dominated hill district of Kangpokpi. In the video, they can be seen being made to walk naked down a road and towards a field by a mob of men. Some of the men can be seen dragging the two women towards a field and forcibly groping them.
