Veteran actor Nimmi passed away on Wednesday evening at a hospital in Mumbai’s Juhu at the age of 87. She was ailing for some time. Her last rites will be held on Thursday.
Nimmi’s brother-in-law Ijhar Hussain told The Indian Express, “She had been unwell for some time now. We had celebrated her 87th birthday on February 18. We will be having the last rites tomorrow but are yet to decide on how to do the funeral considering the body cannot be brought to the society due to the coronavirus, and also we aren’t sure how many people can gather for the funeral. We will take a decision tonight.”
Bollywood celebrities took to Twitter to offer their condolences.
Rishi Kapoor tweeted, “RIP. Thank you Nimmy Aunty for all the blessings and love for Bobby on its premiere release. You were a part of the RK family. Barsaat was your first film. Allah aapko Jannat naseeb kare. Ameen.”
Mahesh Bhatt wrote on Twitter, “‘You may win your hearts desire, but in the end you are cheated of it by death.’ Goodbye Nimmiji. Yesteryear’s dove-eyed actress Nimmi passes away.”
Jaaved Jaaferi posted on Twitter, “A beautiful and extremely talented actress and a beautiful and humble human being passes on. #RIP #Nimmi ji.”
Born as Nawab Banoo, Nimmi was a popular actor of the 50s.
She made her debut in Raj Kapoor’s Barsaat and it was the legendary actor-director, who had given her the screen name of Nimmi.
After the super success of Barsaat, she appeared in a string of hit movies in the 50s and early 60s. Some of her memorable movies included Mehboob Khan’s Aan (1952), Daag (1952), Amar (1954), Uran Khatola (1955), Basant Bahar (1956) and Mere Mehboob (1963).
In most of the movies, Nimmi appeared as what used to be known as “second female lead”.
She featured in a range of genres, from romance, to social dramas and fantasy.
One of her last screen appearance was in Love and God (1986). Apart from Kapoor, she acted with top yesteryear stars such as Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand.
She was married to screenwriter and director S Ali Raza, who passed away in 2007.
