Abhishek Bachchan, who was recently in I Want To Talk, opened up about the time when his career was going through a lull and he thought about quitting showbiz. The actor said that at this time, it was his father Amitabh Bachchan who asked him to stick around and keep working and polishing his craft as Big B believed that there was a “hidden good actor” within Abhishek.

Talking to Galatta Plus, Abhishek said that he had this chat with his father when “a lot of my movies were not working, critics were panning my performances no matter who I worked with.” Abhishek said that he worked with some of the biggest directors of that era “hoping that they will teach me stuff and rectify stuff that I haven’t managed to do and nothing was happening.”

He shared, “Eventually at a weaker moment, which is embarrassing for me to think of now, I went to my dad and I said ‘we need to talk, I think we have made a mistake. I don’t think I am cut out for this because no matter what I do, it isn’t working, I have tried everything. I have tried all genres. I have tried all kinds of cinema. I have tried all kind of filmmakers and I am just not able to do it. Maybe it’s time for me to be honest with myself and say you are not cut out for this, you are not good enough, find something else to do’. And I did go and speak to him about this and he reassured me.”

Abhishek recalled father Amitabh’s words who gave him the confidence to carry on. “He said ‘look, I am talking to you as a senior, not as your father. You are nowhere near the finished product. You have a lot of improving to do and I am noticing improvement in every film of yours. There is a hidden good actor within you. How good you become is upto you and how hard you want to work. The only way you will be able to polish your craft is by working so go out there, whatever film you get just sign and just work’ and that’s what I did,” he recalled.

Abhishek said that it was after this conversation that he started taking up supporting roles. “I didn’t care what kind of a role it was supporting, secondary, tertiary, I did everything, until I found the confidence in myself. Until I could deliver at the box office and people started banking on me as a leading man again,” he said.

Abhishek’s film I Want To Talk released in theatres on Friday and has made Rs 1.5 crore in the first four days. Abhishek started his career in 2000 with Refugee, and experienced his first box office success in 2004 with Dhoom. He appeared in 13 films in these five years.
