Aanand L Rai admits Kangana Ranaut changed after Tanu Weds Manu, Queen: ‘It was difficult’

Filmmaker Aanand L Rai continues to receive love for the hit movies Tanu Weds Manu and Tanu Weds Manu Returns, both starring Kangana Ranaut. The filmmaker reportedly had differences with her during the production of Tanu Weds Manu Returns, which also starred R Madhavan. In a new interview, he admitted that they both changed as people after the first film worked, and declared that if he ever makes a third movie, it will be with Kangana.

The director addressed his equation with Kangana, and said that he, too, changed as a person after experiencing success with Tanu Weds Manu and Ranjhanaa. Opening up about how their equation changed while working on Tanu Weds Manu Returns, he told Bollywood Hungama, “If we talk about Kangana, Tanu Weds Manu (was released in) 2011. Then she went and did Queen (2013) and then she came for (Tanu Weds Manu) Returns. In an actor’s life also there is a graph, by that time, as a director also, I did not want to repeat myself. Kangana wanted to grow and she was on the rise. I think what went right with us is we were hungry at that point in time, in our own space”

“For Datto (Kangana’s charatcer in Tanu Weds Manu Returns) to be like that… and Himanshu (Sharma, the writer of the film), who wrote the first and then he wrote (the second one too)… Me and Himanshu were coming after Ranjhanaa. So, it was Tanu Weds Manu, Ranjhanaa and (Tanu Weds Manu Returns) and she was coming from Tanu Weds Manu, Queen and (Tanu And Manu Returns). So it was difficult, and we wanted it to be difficult,” he added.

He said that he never expected working on the film to be an easy task. “We never wanted it to be easy. I never feel that any film, ‘ke yaar, yeh toh mere liye bohot easy hai (I never want to feel that a film is easy to make).”

Tanu Weds Manu was a career-defining film for Kangana, after she made her acting debut in Anurag Basu’s 2006 film Gangster. Kangana won several awards for the film. “So, Tanu And Manu Returns was a point where we all were high on the thought that we should surpass our previous (film) and surprise our audience. Even at this point, it was not about how much money the film will earn. Which is why we got that reaction (from the audience), people poured in their love,” the filmmaker concluded.
