Aamir Khan admits he made ‘so many mistakes’ on Laal Singh Chaddha: ‘I’ve taken time to absorb the grief’
Aamir Khan recently opened up about Laal Singh Chaddha's failure, and said that he "made so many mistakes in the film". He also emphasised that he received "a lot of love after the flop".
Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor in Laal Singh Chaddha.Though it marked the return of Aamir Khan after a gap of four years, director Advait Chandan’s Laal Singh Chaddha, a remake of the 1994 American film Forrest Gump, bombed at the box office. While the film’s cast and crew were disappointed, a devastated Aamir took the bulk of the blame on himself. Meanwhile, the actor-producer recently opened up about the film’s failure and said that he “made so many mistakes”. In a chat with ABP News, Aamir also emphasised that he received “a lot of love after the flop”.
Mentioning that Laal Singh Chaddha remains close to his heart, Aamir said, “Advait, Kareena and the whole cast and crew worked hard and it didn’t do well. Two things happened, after a long time my film didn’t work, so family and friends would come home to ask me if I’m doing okay. I realised that I’m getting a lot of love after a flop. That was the funny side of it. The serious side is, failure teaches you where you’ve made mistakes. It gives you an opportunity to understand what those mistakes were.”
“I gave it a lot of thought, it was a big learning for me. I remember telling Kiran once, ‘I made so many mistakes in this film on so many levels. Thank God I made these mistakes in just one film.’ Emotionally, I’m hurt that the film has not worked, I’ve taken time to absorb the grief,” he added.
Previously, the film’s casting director Mukesh Chhabra said that Aamir threw a party for the crew after Laal Singh Chaddha flopped because he felt guilty. “After the movie flopped, I spoke to Aamir and Advait Chandan (director); we couldn’t believe the movie had been thrashed. For a film to flop is one thing, but a disaster is a whole different thing altogether,” he said in an interview with The Lallantop.
“Not too many people know this, but Aamir hosted a party for all of us in honour of the crew. He said, ‘Sorry the film didn’t work, but we should all meet’. Who does this? We were all wondering why they were having a party, but they wanted all the departments to come together. Everyone was there, Advait, Pritam, Kareena, everyone was there, Amitabh Bhattacharya was singing songs from the film. Aamir kept saying that it was his fault,” he added.
Penned by Atul Kulkarni based on Eric Roth’s original screenplay, Laal Singh Chaddha also starred Kareena Kapoor Khan, Naga Chaitanya, Mona Singh, and Manav Vij in key roles. The film was jointly produced by Paramount Pictures, Aamir Khan Productions, and Viacom18 Studios.
In her review of the movie, The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta wrote, “It’s not just the pace of the film which is the trouble. It is also, centrally and crucially, Sardar Laal Singh Chaddha himself, as played by Aamir Khan.”
