In a meeting held by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Wednesday, Lieutenant-Governor VK Saxena — who is also the Chairman of the DDA — directed the agency, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the state government to resolve pending inter-departmental and inter-agency issues. Sources, meanwhile, told The Indian Express that the said issues pertain to water supply and sewer facilities in Narela and other areas under the DDA that are pending despite the agency having made advance payments for the same.

Delhi’s Chief Secretary will soon be convening a meeting to resolve these issues.

The DDA had previously claimed that non-cooperation from the previous AAP-led Delhi government had impacted water supply and connectivity to the sub-city. “The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and Delhi Jal Board, which were under the administrative control of the previous government, were reluctant to support the DDA in its endeavour to develop the sub-city,” its spokesperson had said.

Over the past 15 years, the DDA has struggled to find buyers for its housing inventory in Northwest Delhi’s Narela, primarily due to bad connectivity. Residents have also complained of irregular water supply. The Narela sub-city is considered Saxena’s pet project and was renamed as Vindhyachal in June this year by the DDA in an effort to give it a “new image”.

Saxena’s directions come nine months after the BJP-led government took charge of Delhi. “These issues, primarily concerning the DJB, PWD and MCD were created due to a lack of seamless coordination between the agencies over the past decade. A meeting will soon be convened by the Chief Secretary,” the DDA spokesperson said. The Chief Secretary and the MCD Commissioner are ex-officio members of the authority.

Meanwhile, at Wednesday’s meeting, the DDA also approved multiple projects, including changes in the use of 40.23 hectares of land to facilitate the Land Pooling Policy, and the redevelopment of aging DDA staff quarters at Safdarjung Development Area and Old Rajinder Nagar through NBCC. It also cleared land use changes for a multi-sports integrated stadium and a proposed education hub in Narela, along with Delhi’s first Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) housing project at Karkardooma. It extended the enhanced FAR policy for planned commercial centres, by one year, and approved rent compensation for Signature View Apartment residents during its redevelopment. Other approvals included land use changes of a park at INA from ‘recreational’ to ‘residential’, that has been allotted to the Ministry of External Affairs.
