Candidates with benchmark-disabilities (PwBD) vying for various national-level competitive recruitment exams conducted by the UPSC, will now have the option to appear for examinations at the centre of their choice.

According to an announcemnet by the Union Publisc Service Commission (UPSC), this change aims to remove logistical hurdles and improve accessibility for candidates who often face additional challenges while travelling to and from exam locations.

Under the new system, every PwBD applicant will be allotted the examination centre they select while submitting their application.

According to the UPSC, past examination cycles showed that several centres, including Delhi, Cuttack, Patna and Lucknow, reached full capacity early because of high applicant numbers. As a result, PwBD candidates were sometimes forced to choose centres that were not convenient. The Commission stated that the new system will ensure candidates in this category are not affected by such constraints and can appear for the exam at their preferred location.

How the change is being implemented?

In its announcement, the UPSC also outlined a structured approach to implement the change. First, the existing capacity of each centre will continue to be used for both PwBD and non-PwBD candidates. When the regular capacity of a centre is fully occupied, it will be removed from the list for non-PwBD applicants, but PwBD candidates will still be able to choose it.

The Commission will then arrange additional capacity as required, ensuring that no PwBD applicant is denied their preferred examination centre.
