The engineering degrees of four deemed varsities which offer the course through the long-distance mode have been suspended. The University Grants Commission (UGC) followed the Supreme Court’s order to suspend the degrees after a prior decision to retrain universities from continuing any distance learning course from 2018-19 without prior approval.

“AICTE Regulations, do apply to deemed to be universities and the four varsities were not justified in introducing any new courses in Technical Education without the approval of AICTE,” said UGC Secretary PK Thakur.

JRN Rajasthan Vidyapeeth, Allahabad Agricultural Institute (AAI), Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE), Rajasthan and Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation, Tamil Nadu are under a probe by the CBI under the apex body’s orders for granting retrospective approvals.

“Consequent to this..all the degrees in Engineering awarded by concerned deemed to be universities stand suspended,” Thakur said.

The Supreme court had asked the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to hold tests for students whose degrees will be suspended by January 15, 2018. It stated that these student will not be permitted to appear and clear the examination more than two times.
