(Express image / file)Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, has slipped to the 251-300 band in the latest Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings 2025, which were released today. While it retained its position as the top Indian university, IISc failed to enter the global top 250.
The rankings of Anna University, Mahatma Gandhi University, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences have improved with all four entering the 401-500 band. However, Jamia Millia Islamia ranking has gone down (501-600) as compared to the last year.
Indian Institute of Technology Indore is one of the biggest gainers entering the 501-600 band along with UPES.
In the 601-800 belt, 14 Indian institutes have got positions — AMU, Amity University Noida, BHU, BITS Pilani, Chitkara University, IIT-Patna, IIIT-Hyderabad, KIIT University, LPU, Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Panjab University, Symbiosis International University, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, VIT University.
IIT Guwahati, which is in the news for the recent suicides of its students, has moved down to the 801-1000 belt.
The University of Oxford has retained the number one position in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for the ninth year in a row followed by MIT. Moreover, US and UK universities dominate the top 10 position.
The UK-based Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025 feature 2092 universities from over 100 countries and regions. The global performance tables, which evaluate research-intensive universities, assess institutions across all their primary missions: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook.
