The 2020 ranking includes 414 universities, up from 351 in 2019. As many as two universities made it into the top 100, while none could enter the '50 under 50' category.

IITs blame the high weightage given to 'perspective' metrics, which they claim lack transparency. The HRD Minister also said that he does not agree with international rankings and will instead focus on making Indian ranking a dream for international institutes.

The annual ranking by the Ministry of HRD has put IITs, IISc among top-ranking institutes and are promoting these institutes as the hubs for 'Study in India'. However, the institutes have failed to perform in global rankings this year including both THE and QS rankings.

In sub-categories, IIT-Madras achieved the 16th spot in industry, innovation and infrastructure and figured among the top 32 in the world for clean water and sanitation. Apart from IITs, Anna University also ranked 7th and Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science claimed the 18th spot in the world for the clean water and sanitation sub-category.

If leading universities in a nation with such a proud heritage of scholarly excellence, and with such huge opportunities for economic growth declined to take part in the gold standard rankings, we believe it would be detrimental to those institutions, and to India as a whole, said THE official.

The IISc Bangalore's position has slipped from the 251-300 ranking cohort in the previous year to the 301-350 grouping. IIT-Ropar and IIT-Indore have scored a high score in research citations.

In the latest THE University Rankings for Asia, eight institutes placed in the top 100 best institutes in Asia. This is India’s best performance since 2016, in terms of the number of institutes. Last time, India had eight institutes in the top 100 in 2016.
