‘Personal milestone’: At 60, Congress MP Ajay Maken attains PG Diploma in Applied Statistics from ISI Kolkata

Like many others, Covid pandemic gave Maken some time to reflect and retrospect.

Member of Rajya Sabha from the Indian National Congress (INC), Ajay Maken, proved that age is just a number and there is no limit to learning. Maken on September 20 shared news that he completed a PG Diploma in Applied Statistics course from ISI Kolkata.

“This week, at 60, I achieved a personal milestone I’m excited to share. I’ve successfully completed the Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Statistics, specializing in Data Analytics, from Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) Kolkata,” he shared on X (earlier known as Twitter).

At 19, Maken had earlier started pursuing a BSc (Chemistry Hons) degree from Hans Raj College, Delhi University. Following that, he joined the Indian National Congress as NSUI’s Campus Unit President in 1983, and after Lalit Maken’s death in 1985, he committed to full-time politics.

However, this did not stop him. Like many others, Covid pandemic gave Maken some time to reflect and retrospect.

“In 2020, while COVID disrupted lives, it gave me time to reflect and pursue my academic interests. I returned to learning through platforms like Khan Academy, 3Blue1Brown, Coursera, http://DeepLearning.AI, EdX, and DataCamp. I revisited Algebra, Probability, Calculus, Statistics, and picked up Python and R, earning over a dozen certificates in subjects like Statistics, Machine Learning, and Programming,” he added.

“Now, with this Post Graduate Diploma, from such a prestigious institution, my journey continues. Statistics, Sampling, Data Analytics, and Machine Learning are modern political tools, and I hope to make a more meaningful contribution in the realm of politics,” he concluded.
