Refuting reports that over 30 per cent of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-Bombay) students of the current batch are not placed, the institute last night released a statement saying that only 6.1 per cent of the students are looking for jobs.
The institute released the results of an exit survey conducted on the graduating students of 2022-23 and said in a post on X (formerly Twitter): “Lately there has been news that over 30% of IITB students do not get jobs! An exit survey among graduating students in 2022-23 says only 6.1% are still looking for jobs. Here is the survey result for you to decide…”
As per the pie-chart shared by IIT-Bombay, 57.1 per cent of the students of the current batch were placed during the IIT Bombay placements and 12.2 per cent opted for a higher degree. While 10.3 per cent of students found jobs off campus, 8.3 per cent of the current batch were interested in public service. It also added, of the total students, 4.3 per cent have not decided yet on taking a job and 1.6 per cent of them want to start their own ventures.
Of the total placed students, female students secured 58.8 per cent IIT-Bombay placements while 56.7 per cent male students secured jobs. 8.1 per cent of the women students and 5.6 per cent of the male students are still looking for jobs, according to the IIT-Bombay survey.
Meanwhile, countering reports saying that the placements at IITs this year are a flop, IIT Madras in a statement said: “Placements are still ongoing at IIT Madras. Students have varied interests – to pursue higher studies, some want to establish their own startups and venture into entrepreneurship, while some want to attempt competitive exams including civil services. They take time to decide.”
“The placement data will be available at the end of July 2024, post convocation,” the institute added.
