The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a new notification stating that all universities are to offer NCC as an optional subject to students. In a letter addressed to the Vice Chancellors of all the universities, UGC secretary Jaspal S Sandhu has said that NCC is to be offered as an elective subject for the benefit of the students.

The letter is in reference to earlier guidelines issued by the Ministry of Human Recourse Development (MHRD) on August 23, 2016, stating a Ministry of Defence letter in connection with implementing NCC as an elective subject.

The decision for the implementation had been taken at the JSR&D Conference on July 30, 2015, where it was decided that NCC would be implemented as a subject across all universities.

Sandhu also stated in the letter that all questions in the matter are to be directed to the Chief Administrative Officer at the Defence Ministry.

“You are, therefore, requested that you may implement the NCC as an elective subject in your esteemed university for the benefit of the students. Any query in this regard, may be sought from the Joint Secretary (Trg) & CAO, Office of the Joint Secretary (Trg), Chief Administrative Officer, Ministry of Defence, E-Block, Dalhousie Road, New Delhi,” Sandhu said.

The notification was released on November 11, 2016.
