JEE Main 2024 Live Updates: Skills v/s CTC: What to focus more on?
One of the prominent conversations these days is the absence of some big companies in the placement season at IITs. While many have attributed this to the onset of a global recession, there are some other factors as well.
From an undergraduate (UG) engineering student’s point of view, jobs in the information technology (IT) industry, which have the maximum monetary reward-to-effort ratio, are most attractive. Intending to secure a job in IT, most UG students, including those enrolled in Civil, Materials, Chemical and Mechanical engineering in IITs and NITs, focus their efforts on acquiring computer programming skills and often ignore their discipline-specific curricula. The primary aim of students from the above-mentioned disciplines is to secure a job in companies like Amazon, Google or Microsoft along with their computer science engineering peers.
Although some UG students, across these disciplines, become highly skilled in computer programming, most are unable to adapt to the steep learning curve associated with it and are, at best, low-to-medium skill level programmers.

Coming from an orthodox society in Haryana where women are restricted to household chores, my outlook towards life and everything, in general, has changed after getting enrolled in IIT Bombay. Here, there is so much equality between boys and girls. We are encouraged to participate in events and think out of the box.

JEE Main 2024 Live Updates: IIT Roorkee's first batch share the 'best days of our lives'
Gautam Sanyal, BE (Civil) 1968 batch, was just over 17 when he joined IIT Roorkee. While he had heard about other engineering institutes as well, he picked the institute due to its reputation and proximity to his hometown.
“My father was a doctor and posted at Jim Corbett when I was in Class 6. As his timing was odd, I decided not to pursue medicine. While my desire to serve the country made me join the Indian Army, I got admitted to IIT Roorkee after a few months. The officials were unhappy, but I had to convince them in writing that I would join the Army once I graduated. That way, I got placement before even joining the institute,” said Sanyal.
His batchmate Dinesh Pradhan also got admission in the same year and chose mechanical engineering. During those days, too, aspirants had to crack a written test in maths, physics, chemistry, drawing and general knowledge. He completed his BSc first and then later joined IIT Roorkee.
