The Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Monday released the ninth edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024. In the research category, IISc Bengaluru has been placed at the top, followed by IIT Madras and IIT Delhi at the second and third places respectively.
Among the top 10 research institutes, IITs have dominated the category, with seven spots in top 10 secured by IITs.
This year, the evaluation criteria have also been modified. The faculty-to-student ratio has been changed from 1:15 to 1:10 in medical institutes and increased from 1:15 to 1:20 in the state government universities. The ranking framework evaluates institutions on five broad parameters — teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach, and inclusivity, and perception.
Last year as well, IISc Bengaluru was placed in the first in the research category. IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur bagged the second, third, fourth and fifth positions respectively, last year.

The higher educational institutes are listed under 16 categories — overall, universities, medical, engineering, management, law, architecture and planning, colleges, research institutions, pharmacy, dental, agriculture and allied sectors, state funded government universities, skill universities, open universities and innovation. This year, as many as 10,885 higher education institutions participated this year. Last year, as many as 5,543 higher education institutions participated in the NIRF.
In addition to the research rankings and performances in the engineering and university categories, NIRF also lists out best institutions across eight other categories – college, medical, management, pharmacy, law, architecture, dental and overall.
