NIRF 2024: Top university, colleges rankings today

In 2023, IIT Madras continued its dominance as the best higher education institution in the country as it secured the top spot for the fifth consecutive year.

NIRF Ranking 2024: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) will announce the NIRF India Ranking 2024 on August 12, at 3 pm. Once released, the complete list, category-wise, will be uploaded at the official website — nirfindia.org.

Last year, the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT M) continued its dominance as the best higher education institution in the country as it secured the top spot for the fifth consecutive year. IIT Madras also bagged the first position in engineering for the eighth year in a row and was assessed as the second-best research institution in the country. IIT Madras missed the top spot in the research category by merely 2.2 marks, which was claimed by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru.

In the overall category, ranks third to tenth in the ‘overall’ category of 2023 were secured by IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, AIIMS Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

Just like the engineering category, the medical category also saw repeated winner. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi once again earned the top rank in the list of medical colleges last year. AIIMS Delhi was followed by Chandigarh’s Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Christian Medical College and Bangalore’s National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), who also retained their second, third and fourth spot, respectively.

NIRF 2023 rankings were released by the Minister of State for Education, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh. The 2023 rankings assessed 5,543 higher education institutions across 13 categories – ‘overall’, universities, medical, engineering, management, law, architecture, colleges, research institutions, pharmacy, dental, agriculture and allied sectors, and innovation. The agriculture category was introduced last year. As of now, no new category has been announced this year.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was approved by the MHRD and launched by Minister of Human Resource Development on September 29, 2015.
