IIT Mandi Engineering Couses Trend: IIT Mandi continues to attract increasing interest from aspirants seeking undergraduate engineering programmes, with the latest data showing steady double-digit growth across nearly all courses — extending an upward trend that began in 2024. Leading once again is Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), which received 19,202 candidate choices in 2025, up from 16,569 in 2024 and 14,724 in 2023. The course recorded a 12.53 per cent rise last year and an even steeper 15.89 per cent increase this year, underscoring the consistent dominance of computing disciplines amid rising demand for expertise in AI, software systems, and data analytics, according to the 2025 Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) data.

A major highlight of 2025 is the newly introduced BTech in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, which registered an impressive 15,951 candidate choices in its debut year — the second-highest across all branches. Its immediate popularity reflects the rising student inclination toward data-centric and machine-learning-driven technologies. While the BTech in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is launched this year, the BTech in Data Science and Engineering programme, which attracted as many as 12,676 students in 2024, and 10,717 in 2023 have been discontinued this year.
Close behind CSE is Electrical Engineering, which rose from 11,674 in 2023 to 13,139 in 2024 (12.55 per cent growth) and further to 14,892 in 2025, marking a 13.34 per cent rise this year. Mechanical Engineering too has maintained momentum, climbing from 10,090 in 2023 to 11,810 in 2024 (17.05 per cent) and to 13,486 in 2025 (14.19 per cent).

Among interdisciplinary and specialised courses, Mathematics and Computing advanced from 8,832 in 2023 to 11,139 in 2024 (26.12 per cent) and 13,040 in 2025 (17.07 per cent). Similarly, Microelectronics & VLSI grew sharply from 6,818 in 2023 to 9,090 in 2024 (33.32 per cent) and 11,078 in 2025, showing another 21.87 per cent jump as India’s semiconductor and chip-design ecosystem expands.
Core sciences and materials-based disciplines also showed impressive continuity. Materials Science and Engineering recorded 5,286 choices in 2023, 6,892 in 2024 (30.38 per cent growth), and 8,015 in 2025 (16.29 per cent). Engineering Physics rose from 6,260 in 2023 to 7,284 in 2024 (16.36 per cent) and 8,185 this year (12.37 per cent). Bio Engineering advanced from 5,069 in 2023 to 6,195 in 2024 (22.21 per cent) and 7,043 in 2025 (13.69 per cent).
